WELCOME!
You are reading our first official blog which we are calling "A word from the Word." In this first installment, we want to help you get to know us.
Masterpiece Biblical Counseling was founded in 2017 for the purpose of providing biblically-sound counsel for hurting people. Ideally, care for hurting souls should be provided in and through the local church, but for a number of reasons the local church is not always able to meet the needs of their people. In situations where people are not able to turn to their church for care, MBC is helping to fill the need for sound biblical counsel for individuals and families.
KEY VERSE
"For we are his workmanship (MASTERPIECE), created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." Ephesians 2:10
As we engage with people in every imaginable situation, we are mindful of the fact that the Lord is actively doing a beautiful work in the life of every believer. He is molding, sanctifying, and transforming each of us, counselees and counselors alike, to be more like Christ. This is a basis for hope in the midst of difficult circumstances.
PHILOSOPHY OF MINISTRY
MBC ministry is founded on two very important truths:
God’s Word is sufficient for assessing and addressing the difficulties of life. (1 Peter 3:16, Hebrews 4:12)
God is actively doing a work of sanctification in the life of every believer (1 Thessalonians 4:3, John 15:1-4, Hebrews 12:7-11, Philippians 1:6, Ephesians 2:10, 3:14-20).
COUNSELING OBJECTIVES
We think of the counseling experience as a journey. We do not wander aimlessly, but move forward with goals in mind to guide the counseling process. The counselor's first objective is to listen well. Depending on the complexity of the situation, the first few sessions may be primarily devoted to listening. Eventually the counseling will transition to a more interactive phase.
Short-term counseling goals - The first step is to provide the counselee with a biblical framework for understanding the difficulty they are experiencing and to point them to biblically-based hope and comfort. Counselees will be given relevant homework to facilitate time in God’s Word, prayer and personal reflection.
Long-term counseling goals - Life on this earth is full of challenges and the current issue that prompted the individual to seek counseling will likely not be the last of the difficulties they may face in life. The long-term goal of counseling will be to help the counselee develop a stronger faith and a deeper, more meaningful relationship with the Lord that will serve them well beyond the term of the current crisis.
CARE MODEL
We endeavor to achieve the short-term and long-term counseling goals through a four-fold approach to care.
Christ-Centered: A dynamic personal relationship with Jesus Christ is key to experiencing freedom from overwhelming despair, anxiety, discouragement, besetting sins, and the difficulties of life. The issues at hand will be addressed in light of the Gospel hope that is ours, and the counselee will be encouraged and given tools to help them grow in their relationship with Christ. (John 15, 16:33, Col 1:20)
Biblically-Based: The Scriptures are the primary source of wisdom for all counsel and assigned homework. Counseling sessions will include reading relevant passages from the Bible and helping the counselee to apply biblical truth to their life and situation. (Hebrews 4:12, 1 Peter 3:16)
Spirit-Lead: The Holy Spirit is the true Counselor who dwells within all believers. We rely on the Spirit to grant wisdom and discernment as we counsel and to provide help in understanding spiritual truth. (John 14:16, 26, Ephesians 3:20)
Prayer-Saturated: Every counseling session will begin and end with prayer, and counselees will be prayed for on a regular basis through intercessory prayer. (James 5:16)
